[vc_row][vc_column][vc_custom_heading text=”Creative Arts” use_theme_fonts=”yes” el_class=”text-blue-stg”][vc_separator color=”juicy_pink”][vc_column_text]One of the fundamental objectives at St. George’s College is the artistic and creative training of our students. Through art, we seek to develop self-expression, self-discipline, self-esteem and to enable them to adopt a critical stance when dealing with different situations. The goal is that our students reach a sense of accomplishment at both personal and collective level.
We aim at encouraging individual expression based on the students’ personal experiences, on their capacity for interpretation and for developing their own artistic view.
To achieve this, we develop our students’ innate ability to express themselves through the different types of communication that range from visual arts (drawing, painting, sculpture, engraving and photography), music (traditional Peruvian instruments, percussion, violin, cello, flute, guitar and choir) to drama and contemporary dance. This is the way we develop innovative and creative thinkers, improving cultural and artistic sensitivity in general. Students are thus motivated to recognise and build their own identity, reaffirming their personality by identifying and expressing their personal interests.
These specialised subjects (visual arts, music and drama) are taught from Nursery to IB level, giving all students the opportunity to participate in several art, drama and musical productions and exhibitions that take place throughout the school year.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Visual Arts” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%23dd3333″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]Visual Arts are fundamental to our curriculum. We believe arts make a valuable contribution to the education of all children and adolescents, as they offer opportunities and experiences that are useful to develop aesthetics and social skills together with the spiritual, ethical, cultural and theoretical aspects.
Mission
The visual arts curriculum seeks to establish a creative, supportive and inspiring atmosphere, where both students and teachers use their imagination and freedom to develop an aesthetic and critical perspective.
Our main goal is to stimulate each and every one of our students’ visual language, to increase and intensify their aesthetic experience; to motivate them based on their personal experience concerning various cultural manifestations and those of the environment that surrounds them. The visual arts thus become a channel for our students to express their sensitivity in a piece of artwork.
The visual arts curriculum also promotes investigation, critical thinking and analysis, as it recognises that creativity and experience are the foundation of innovative thinking.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Curriculum is designed to:” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%23dd3333″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_tta_tabs][vc_tta_section title=”Early Years” tab_id=”1486269463764-0782667f-98ad”][vc_column_text]
- Reinforce the appreciation of art production as a way to encapsulate the world that surrounds them.
- Experiment with different materials so that they become aware of all the possible uses of such materials.
- Improve their fine and gross motor skills as a basis for the development of future aesthetics exercises.
- Introduce them to the use of line, shape, colour, chiaroscuro and volume so that they start recognizing elements that constitute the language of art.

- Guide children to appreciate their own environment, the artwork of other artists and the historical and cultural context in which each artistic expression took place.
- Reaffirm the rules of coexistence within the artwork of each student and his or her classmates, to show how to work freely but together and in harmony.
- Experiment with various techniques in order to come up with new insights, as well as to conceptualise and creatively communicate their own ideas and feelings.
- Know the meaning of what is perceived and observed within their own cultural environment, incorporating, as well, a critical analysis of their own reality.

- Familiarise the student with the new disciplines in contemporary art (digital photography, installation, performance, video-art and animation).
- Experiment with different art techniques (painting, drawing, illustration, sculpture, photography and engraving) so that the student becomes aware of a wide range of artistic possibilities and so chooses the one that best fits the concept he is trying to communicate to achieve a more complete result.
[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_column_text]Our teaching as a whole is based on the principle that art is connected to the development of basic skills and knowledge, which promote a new personal vision of the world. To achieve this, our students must be capable of choosing and making their own decisions throughout their artistic education, and therefore feeling more autonomous with each passing year. This allows students to assume their own responsibility for their learning, choosing the topics or techniques they wish to use in order to reach their goals.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Music” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%23dd3333″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]Music is a kind of language that allows us to communicate without the need of the spoken word; it gives us the possibility to express in a comprehensive manner all kinds of emotions. Thus, through music, it is possible to enhance and develop cognitive, social, emotional, and psychomotor skills, which is immediately transferrable across cultures.
As a result, music is given a high priority at our school, and presentations and concerts are carried out throughout the year.
Practice is the most important component of a student’s weekly routine to develop as a musician. Music teachers guide students in their journey; however, students themselves must be accountable for their daily efforts.
Tuition is provided through specialised teachers in the following instruments: violin, cello, acoustic and electric guitars, electric bass, recorder, percussion and traditional Peruvian instruments.
Through the support of the Music Department, teachers, and coordinators of the Junior and Senior levels, St. George’s College offers a musical education for all its students. It is our wish to impart a love and appreciation of music of varying styles.
“Music is the real universal language.”
Carl Maria von Weber, German composer
“It is only by introducing the young to great literature, drama and music, and to the excitement of great science, that we open them the possibilities that lie within the human spirit – enable them to see visions and dream dreams.”
Eric Anderson, American composer

The child begins to discover sound through simple rhythms and melodies with body movements that allow them to discover and identify the power of sound. They then start working on the discrimination of sounds that establishes the difference between environmental sounds and the sounds of musical instruments. Children also start singing simple melodies. Students start instrumental practice using simple percussion instruments (triangle, toc-toc, xylophones, etc.). At this level, awareness is rhythmic and melodic through the practice of exercises and simple songs that lead to the formation of small instrumental ensembles and choral music.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Lower School” tab_id=”1486269644638-9d599966-00c8″][vc_column_text]Students at this level develop music literacy, choral and instrumental practice with, for example, the recorder. From grade 2 onwards, the violin is implemented as a second option within the curriculum. We also have additional activities where the students can choose a musical instrument (violin, guitar, percussion, electric bass, cello).
As to the extra-curricular activities, students have the option to participate in various groups such as the instrumental ensemble, the violin ensemble or the school’s choir.[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Senior School” tab_id=”1486269680449-bdb8b518-471c”][vc_column_text]Students in Senior School are prepared to reach an intermediate level of competence in vocal and instrumental learning. In Grade 6 students start learning the recorder, and violin is added to the percussion practice within the curriculum. From Grade 7 to Grade 9 students choose the Creative Arts course that interest them most: music, drama, dance or visual arts.
Apart from learning a particular instrument, musical theory and history, classes are complemented with exhibitions of various composers and musical styles. As in the Lower School, students participate in workshops (percussion, guitar, violin, flute, electric bass).[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=”Competitions and exhibitions” tab_id=”1486269697530-d3d3e195-6463″][vc_column_text]St. George´s College encourages students’ participation in different internal and external musical events, such as: ADECOPA, IB Bands Festival, Nueva Acrópolis Music Contest, Talent Evenings, Open Day and the Christmas Show.
“Music has a great importance to quell violence. It is a break for peace within the turmoil of our times.” Mehta, Zubin (Orchestra Director, Israel).[/vc_column_text][/vc_tta_section][/vc_tta_tabs][vc_custom_heading text=”Drama” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%23dd3333″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]The Drama course aims to develop the possibilities of movement of each student, by stimulating the expression of body and voice in space.
It also promotes and encourages the discovery of a student’s creative sensitivity through individual and group exercises and improvisations, strengthening the foundations of the theatrical creation and specifically his acting skills, which will assist him in his personal development.
Drama has as a benefit the possibility for the student to recognise him/herself physically and emotionally in order to prepare his/her instrument (body/voice) and put it in the service of creation, promoting in this way self-discipline and rigour in the student.
It is proposed that the student becomes aware of his/her expressive ability and that, through exercises that stimulate verbal and bodily expression, he/she start developing this capacity. He/she will also be able to develop communication skills and interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences.[/vc_column_text][vc_custom_heading text=”Danza” font_container=”tag:h3|text_align:left|color:%23dd3333″ use_theme_fonts=”yes”][vc_column_text]This course is aimed at Senior Level students, who would like to experience a variety of enjoyable dance classes, which are at the same time educational, and include modern, folkloric and international genres.
Dance is a course that meets these requirements because it considers the body as an instrument, turning it into the quintessential protagonist; thus the students will learn to differentiate movements and rhythms and will face their innate shyness as they strengthen their various multiple intelligences to achieve their interpretation through the most beautiful form of expression, one that works directly with their sensitivity.
Objectives
- Promote an encounter with Peruvian and international culture through dance.
- Encourage student participation in activities that stimulate and strengthen accountability, collaboration, artistic and cultural development and affirmation of peace, thus bringing the student closer to dancing as a cultural art form, while providing experiences of this activity.
- Strengthen the importance of practising our folk dances to preserve the value and diffusion of these, thus reaffirming our national identity and the diffusion of our cultural heritage.
- Show foreign genres and strengthen the experience of living in a globalised world.
- Develop and use different multiple intelligences.
- Develop and promote co-education through rhythm and the different body movements, coordination, spatial development, attention, concentration and perception, which will endow students with a greater mastery of rhythmic and motor responses to various situations.
- Reaffirm their presence in space, looking for a good relationship with their peers, in solidarity, respect, democracy and tolerance.
- Guide the student to accept his body through movement and to learn about body language as a new way of expression and communication that goes from inside to outside and forever.
